Assemble these supplies:
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 stick unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 1 tablespoon minced fresh basil, or 1 teaspoon dried
- 1 tablespoon minced fresh oregano, or 1 teaspoon dried
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
- 1 loaf French or Italian bread, white or whole wheat
- Preheat broiler.
- Peel garlic and mince finely.
- In small bowl, mash together butter, garlic, basil, oregano, and pepper until thoroughly combined.
- Halve bread lengthwise and spread cut sides with butter mixture. Place on cookie sheet, buttered sides up.
- Broil bread until butter is brown and bubbly and bread is lightly toasted, 1 to 2 minutes.
